For most children, it is harmless, but it can make young babies very sick. Sometimes hospitalization is necessary due to shortness of breath or difficulty feeding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What has changed?<\/strong><br>Starting in October, all babies in the Netherlands will be able to receive a free shot containing antibodies against the RS virus.<br>This vaccine protects your baby during the first few months after birth, when the risk of serious illness is highest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How does it work?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your baby will get&nbsp;<strong>no vaccine<\/strong>, but&nbsp;<strong>ready-made antibodies<\/strong>&nbsp;through a small injection.<\/li>\n\n<li>These antibodies help protect your baby right away against the RS virus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Who is eligible for this vaccine?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>All babies born on or after April 1, 2025<\/strong>&nbsp;are eligible.<\/li>\n\n<li>The injection is administered through the&nbsp;<strong>child health clinic (JGZ)<\/strong>, not through the midwife.<\/li>\n<li>The administration depends on when your baby was born:<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Babies born between October and March<\/strong>&nbsp;receive the shot within 2 weeks of birth.<\/li>\n\n<li><strong>Babies born between April and September<\/strong>&nbsp;They receive the vaccine just before the RSV season (September\/October), provided they are younger than 6 months.<\/li>\n<\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Is the shot safe?<\/strong><br>Yes. The antibody injection (nirsevimab, brand name\u00a0<strong>Beyfortus\u00ae<\/strong>) has been thoroughly tested and found to be safe.<br>Side effects are rare and usually mild, such as some redness at the injection site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What's next?<\/strong><br>We can give you a brochure during your pregnancy so you\u2019ll know exactly what to expect from the vaccination at the well-baby clinic.
