In any case, it makes a lot of kids happy. All over the world, as you can see in the photos!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/aandelaak.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/Afbeelding-van-WhatsApp-op-2023-02-17-om-13.01.49-576x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3000\" width=\"282\" height=\"501\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/aandelaak.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/Afbeelding-van-WhatsApp-op-2023-02-17-om-13.01.49-1-576x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3001\" width=\"283\" height=\"503\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But in obstetrics, a balloon has a completely different meaning! Inserting a small balloon is sometimes necessary during induction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Why an introduction?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Induction is often recommended if we believe the baby can be delivered more easily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This could be the case, for example, with:<\/p>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Running late (serotinity)<\/li><li>Prolonged rupture of membranes without contractions<\/li><li>Growth delay in the baby<\/li><li>High blood pressure<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are other reasons for giving this advice. We assess each situation on a case-by-case basis. Every person and every pregnancy is different! It\u2019s always a good idea to ask us or your gynecologist about the reasoning behind the advice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>When is a small balloon needed?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If labor is to be induced, the hospital\u2019s midwife, physician assistant, or gynecologist will check to see if the cervix is already slightly dilated or softened. We call this \u201cripeness.\u201d If the cervix is not sufficiently ripe, the option of inserting a balloon catheter may be considered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What is a balloon?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.isala.nl\/media\/27766\/ballonkatheter-ppt-bevallingsbijeenkomst-rechtenvrij-maartje-kunen-def.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"299\" height=\"311\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The balloon catheter used for priming is the same as the one used to empty the bladder. It is a flexible latex tube with a diameter of a few millimeters. This tube is inserted through the vagina into the cervix. At the tip of the catheter is a small balloon that is filled with sterile water until it reaches a diameter of about 2 to 3 centimeters. The presence of the balloon in the cervix stimulates the uterus to produce prostaglandins on its own, which cause your cervix to ripen. This is often accompanied by hardening of the abdomen.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What happens next?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the balloon is inserted, you\u2019ll wait 24 hours. Sometimes you\u2019ll stay in the hospital, and sometimes you\u2019ll be allowed to go home with the balloon still in place. Contractions may start spontaneously after the balloon is inserted!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the balloon falls out, the degree of ripeness can be reassessed. If the cervix is dilated to about 2 to 3 cm, they can often proceed with inducing labor (if spontaneous contractions have not started). This is done by rupturing the membranes and (if this does not trigger contractions) administering an IV drip of oxytocin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Party?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, yeah, I don't know if a water breaking is something to celebrate. It's not always pleasant when it happens, of course! But it does mean the baby is on the way and we'll get to cuddle soon!
