An IUD is a very reliable form of birth control. There are basically two types of IUDs: the hormone-free copper IUD (T-Safe and Multi-Safe) and the hormonal IUD (Mirena and Kyleena).<\/p>\n

Hormone-free IUD<\/u><\/p>\n

A copper IUD is a hormone-free form of birth control that gradually releases small amounts of copper. Copper paralyzes the sperm that enter the uterus and renders them inactive, making the chance of fertilization virtually nonexistent.<\/p>\n

The T-Safe copper IUD is highly reliable, hormone-free, and approved for use for 10 years. The Multi-Safe Short copper IUD is also very reliable, hormone-free, and approved for use for 5 years. This IUD is slightly smaller and is therefore a suitable alternative for women with a smaller uterus. Of course, you can also have either IUD inserted for a short period, such as between pregnancies.<\/p>\n

With a copper IUD, you maintain your natural menstrual cycle. Possible side effects you may experience during the first three months after insertion include: longer and\/or heavier periods, abdominal cramps, and spotting. After this period, your natural cycle will return to normal. Many women find that their bleeding increases slightly compared to their periods without contraception. Hormone-releasing IUD<\/u><\/p>\n

The hormonal IUD gradually releases a small amount of hormones and causes the cervical mucus to become \u2018thicker,\u2019 making it harder for sperm to pass through. The release of the hormone levonorgestrel into the uterus reduces sperm motility and makes the egg less penetrable, which lowers the chance of fertilization. Due to the release of the hormone and because the IUD is a \u201cforeign object\u201d in the uterus, the uterine lining does not build up, or builds up only minimally. As a result, a fertilized egg cannot implant itself. Finally, in some women, ovulation is suppressed. If no egg is released, fertilization cannot occur.<\/p>\n

There are two different types of hormonal IUDs: the Mirena and the Kyleena. The difference lies in their size: the Kyleena is slightly smaller and therefore releases a little less hormone, and its effectiveness is approved for 5 years. For the Mirena, effectiveness is approved for 8 years. Both IUDs are equally reliable. You can also have these IUDs inserted for a short period, for example, between pregnancies. An IUD for Everyone?<\/strong><\/p>\n
